What is a Multisensory Interactive Learning Environment (MiLE)?

The Multisensory Interactive Learning Environment or MiLE for short, is a fantastic new development in sensory room technology.  It is a calming sensory room, stimulating sensory room, interactive sensory room and an Interactive learning platform - all rolled into one!

MILE environments are already being used by a number of leading schools in the UK to offer groundbreaking new learning opportunities for both mainstream and special needs pupils. The flexible, dedicated system offers a new method of teaching that works by stimulating a range of senses.

Where today, chalk and blackboards only feature in the history lessons of many UK schools, when compared to the learning potential of the MILE, whiteboards are also likely to become a thing of the past. Incorporating changing light, sound, video, vibration, moving  air and different aromas, the MILE system creates an environment that can calm or stimulates the senses, making lessons imaginative, exciting, creative and fun.

Whilst the MiLE creates an environment where learning is fun for students, it also encourages teachers to let their creativity flow. If you're teaching Geography, imagine being in the middle of the rainforest surrounded by the dense greenery while hearing the sound of birds moving in the undergrowth, the wind blowing in the trees, the smell of the fauna in your nostrils and the sight of animals ahead!

Or if you're teaching history, why not take your pupils into London during the blitz - the smell of the smoke in your nostrils, bright search lights scouting for bombers and the red and yellow of buildings aflame - whist videos show the camaraderie of civilians during the experience.

Pupils can control all the pieces of equipment using our IRiS Talkers (switches) meaning the room can be used as a normal interactive sensory room perfect for developing lifeskills if required.

The MiLE can also be the ultimate in relaxation room’s ideal for calming a child who may be
boisterous or distressed.

The Power Behind MILE

MILE was created following an intensive  two-year develop programme and the incredible power and flexibility of the system is only made possible by the strength of the software built to drive it. Designed and written specifically for the system with teachers and carers in mind, the IRiS Room Director software ensures the MiLE is used to its full potential using our wireless IRiS products.

The software is based on drag and drop to allow easy creation of 'scenarios' which can be tailored to every subject, theme or story. You are in complete control the 'scenario' you want to create. A large range of media can also be easily integrated into to the system at the click of a mouse, from film clips, photographs and pictures, text and visualisations, as well as existing Microsoft Powerpoint and Opus presentations.

Not only that, you choose which sense to stimulate by controlling IRiS products, LED lights to flood an area with colour, IRiS Scanners to move light around a room, IRiS Aroma Generators to produce aromas, IRiS Jet Stream to determine wind strength, IRiS Vibration unit to give a different level of vibration, and of course, Video.

The system is capable of storing and running an endless number of relaxation, interactive and teaching scenarios that can be used by any number of participants simultaneously and adapted to any theme.

It's also completely versatile and each scenario can be designed to suit an individual and help develop skills including cause and effect, colour, number and shape recognition, gross and fine motor skills to name but a few.
