De-Escalation is the action of reducing the intensity of a conflict
Although most people with developmental disabilities are not violent or aggressive, some people with more severe disabilities may experience high levels of frustration, which can be expressed through both aggressive and self-injurious behaviors.
Multi-sensory rooms can have a profound effect on one’s mood and can help to calm and organize the body especially, when one feels a loss of control and is having a difficult time expressing their emotions resulting in behaviour that needs to be de-escalated. A sensory room experience can put control back into their hands as they successfully manipulate their way around a room with fibre optics, interactive panels, and soothing images. The change in sound and sight frequency can allow someone to calm and organize themselves. The sensory room also provides them with a safe environment where they can do this.
Please note that if an individual is extremely upset and you think will be unsafe in a sensory room then do not use the room and find a safe place for the individual to go. Safety is our number one priority when using our rooms.
