Reminiscence is defined as the enjoyable recollection of past events.

Reminiscence can be a very effective therapy for patients with Alzheimer's Disease and other forms of Dementia. It not only allows easier connection with the person who has dementia, it can also help manage some of the more distressing symptoms of the illness by taking the user back to an experience that they understand and so helping them to feel in control.

"We all possess memories, we all have our own unique life history. Recalling the past is a means of owning it and hence preserving ourselves. It is a here and now process which holds the teller and the told in relationship with each other." Faith Gibson (1998)

The multisensory environments and products listed below can all be used for reminiscence. Whether that's through listening to specific choices of music or old radio programmes with the Bluetooth Speakers and Amplifier in our Dementia Sensory Room to take a user back to a fondly remembered time, or through the use of videos and favourite old movies on the Sensory Cart, or by creating a fully immersive and interactive experience to take a user back to wherever and whenever they want to go with the Wanderlust Immersive Room.

If you'd like to speak to someone about setting up the perfect sensory environment for your users' needs, you can always contact us and one of our sensory advisors will be on hand to help.
